"Hello, Lake Forest Country Club. May I help you?" These were the words Kendall heard from Leslie Donaldson when he called to make his massage appointment one afternoon. He smiled. Leslie's pleasant voice had greeted callers for almost four years Tuesday and Thursday evenings, along with most Saturday afternoons. It had been his idea to enlist college students as receptionists at the club after daytime hours. He had figured, quite correctly, that such an easy job would be appealing to young ladies who were trying to earn money while in school. Leslie had been the first one hired, and she had been with them for four years, almost never missing a shift. The board of directors had been somewhat skeptical at first, but she was the main reason for the success of the program.
"Hi, Leslie. This is Kendall. I'm just calling to make a massage appointment for Thursday evening."
"Oh, hi Kendall," she cheerfully replied. "How's it goin'?" Kendall had been like a rich uncle to her since she had arrived at school. She felt no obligation to be efficient and professional with him. Leslie liked him, and the job he had provided had been a godsend, especially since she could study at work when the phone wasn't busy.
"It goes well, Leslie. Although I'm a little sorry to know that you'll be leaving us soon. How's school?"
"It's fine--by the way, do you want seven or eight for your appointment?" She jotted down his answer. "Finals are coming up soon, and my honors thesis paper is almost done. I'm going to be a little sorry that I'm leaving, too. Okay, you are booked for eight p.m. this coming Thursday. Anything else?" She lit a Virginia Slim Light menthol while he replied. "Okay. I'll be on duty at the front desk that night, so I'll see you then, too." She smiled as she hung up the phone.

Kendall cycled his arm at the front desk, waiting for Leslie to get off the phone. He wanted to invite her and her boyfriend to dinner in honor of her graduation. He thought of the strawberry blonde as a kid sister; even though she smoked with very little style, which didn't go unnoticed, Leslie had never been a candidate for the training program. She looked up at him as she hung up. "Feeling better now that you're all relaxed and sore?" she kidded.
"I know, I know, they really work you over here," he finished their standard joke. "I was wondering..." Kendall hesitated a little, unsure of how his offer would be perceived. "Anyway, in honor of your graduation with honors, would you and Bob like to go out to dinner, on me, sometime graduation week? You were the first college student we hired, and as de facto chairman of our work-study program, I feel that you should get something special for being here for four years, and putting up with us hoity-toity folks."
Leslie's smile and surprise were genuine, but her face quickly fell. "I'm afraid that graduation week is going to be full. Bob and I are going to be away for a few days after finals--I won't be back until Tuesday, and I kinda wanna spend it alone with him because my folks are coming in Wednesday night for the honors thing. I have to go out with my dad and stepmom that night, and then my mom on Thursday after the individual recognition ceremony. They've declared a truce for Friday, when we all go out that afternoon after the big graduation." She sighed. "I really appreciate the offer, though, Kendall. You've been a great boss--wait--maybe my mom would like to go out with us! She really wants to meet you, 'cause I've talked so much about you. My dad and stepmom are out of the question--he wouldn't understand, and she's just a bitch."
Now it was Kendall's turn to smile. "I was planning to go to the ceremony Thursday night. Why don't we plan on dinner after the individual ceremony if it's okay with your mother?" he asked. She accepted, and Kendall walked out of the country club with a happy smile on his face. His kid sister was going to graduate with honors, and celebrate it with a dinner at the best restaurant in town with her mother and her boyfriend.

When the individual recognition ceremony ended, Kendall searched for Leslie in the milling crowd. Since he wasn't family, he had been relegated to sitting in the back of the theater. Her boyfriend's unmistakable shock of red hair gave her location away. Kendall worked his way through the crowd and greeted them with a big smile on his face. "Congratulations, Leslie! Now you only need the thing that fills that diploma holder." She gave him a hug and a peck on the cheek, beaming. He shook Bob's hand with a grin. "You, too. You've both made it through the last four years of freedom."
"And who have we here, Leslie?" came a female voice from behind. Kendall turned and looked at an auburn-haired woman, slightly taller than Leslie, older, but with the same blue eyes. He guessed she was no older than forty, and still rather attractive at first glance.
Leslie blushed. 'I'm forgetting my manners, Kendall, sorry. This is my mom, Patricia Weaver. Mom, this is my boss, Kendall Craft."
Leslie's mother looked directly into his eyes, her expression changing instantly from confusion to one of happy surprise. "Oh, Mr. Craft!!! Leslie has told me so much about you!" She shook his hand with a feminine grip."I want to thank you. When Leslie told me that you were willing to take us to dinner, I was thrilled. But you shouldn't have to pay for me--"
"Ms. Weaver, it is my honor to be taking the three of you to dinner at Fortissimo--" Leslie's gasp made her mother look inquisitively at her. "--And please, call me Kendall, just like Leslie does. I haven't felt like her supervisor since her second day at work, when I gave her the full tour of the facilities," he smiled. "I'm ready to go whenever you are. The restaurant will hold our table, so if there's anything you need to do in the next few hours--"
"Mister--Kendall," Patricia interrupted, correcting herself, "I need to fix my face before we leave, since Fortissimo is such a big deal, judging by my daughter's reaction."
"Mom, it's only the fanciest, best restaurant in town!" Leslie whispered, still shocked by Kendall's casual generosity; this would easily cost him two hundred fifty dollars. At least.
"In that case dear, I will definitely need to look my best. I'll be back in a couple of minutes." Patricia turned and headed off as Kendall watched her. The three remaining people made small talk until Leslie's mom came back. "Well, that's settled," she snapped. The blue eyes were blazing in a barely masked display of anger. "I need a cigarette," Patricia announced, and headed outside.
Leslie took off after her mother. "Mom! What's wrong?" Kendall and Bob looked at each other, shrugged, and slowly headed for the door that the two women went through.
"Your father's wench has declared that if I attend Friday's brunch, she will not," Patricia said, reaching into her purse. "And if she doesn't, he won't, either. Because they do everything together." She pulled out a cigarette without removing the pack. She lit it quickly, and took a long drag, pausing before lifting her chin a bit, then exhaling.
"Can't he just forget her for a few hours on my graduation??!!" It started as a yell, but ended up being a quiet, half-spoken snarl. The expression on Leslie's face mirrored her mother's. Kendall and Bob came out the door.
"Apparently not--" Patricia's expression softened when she realized that Kendall had been caught in the cross- fire. "Oh--I'm sorry, Kendall. I realize how awkward this is for you--Leslie's father and I are not on the best of terms, as I'm sure you've gathered by now." She took a long, deep drag on her cigarette, and waited, waited, then slowly, casually, exhaled a narrow stream. "I apologize for the outburst. Can it be forgotten for the evening?" Patricia was relieved when he nodded and said yes with a smile.
Kendall's heart had jumped when he saw the long, slender brown cigarette between her fingers. Patricia had been somewhat attractive before, but now she would have his undivided attention. "I hope you don't mind smokers, Kendall," she continued, "but I enjoy it. It relaxes me."
He carefully replied, "No, not at all. The reservations are in the smoking section; after all, it's Leslie's night." He didn't want Patricia (or Leslie, for that matter) to get suspicious; it was difficult to watch the older woman without being obvious. Bob excused himself and left the group for a moment. Kendall knew it was going to be a long night as Patricia took another draw from the long cigarette. She held the smoke and sighed quietly after a few seconds, sending smoke into the air through her parted lips. Kendall lit Leslie's Virginia Slim Light menthol, and stole another discreet look at Patricia. He started to feel a little--uncomfortable. "So, Kendall, what do you do?" Leslie's mom took another deep drag, held it, then exhaled slowly, silently, a picture of casual, stylish, feminine grace.
"I hypnotize women so they look as good smoking as you do..." went through his mind, but instead, he said, "Oh, I'm retired. I made my fortune in computer games by the time I was twenty-five. Now I just get royalties and consulting retainers, Ms. Weaver."
"Oh no--please, call me Patty," she smiled, and took another drag from the slender, glowing brown cigarette between her fingers. The light from the building silhouetted the stream of smoke from her lips on the calm, warm evening. "Retired at twenty-five... I wonder what that would have been like. Leslie was in the first grade, and I was working full-time at the department store." She paused, looking nostalgic. "And now she's graduating from college." Bob returned, and Patty took a last, lingering drag, throwing the cigarette away. "Okay, who's driving?" she grinned. "I'm beginning to get hungry."
Kendall smiled, and his mind began to work again since Patty wasn't smoking anymore. "I took the liberty of hiring a car for us. After all, this is a very special occasion." He waved to the limousine parked in the lot. Yes, it was special, made even more so by the elegant, graceful, incredibly sexy More smoker he had just met. You just didn't meet many women with her sense of style these days.

"You can order whatever you want on the menu. Cost is no object," Kendall announced as they got out of the limousine in front of Fortissimo. "Tony has promised us a very special dessert, Leslie. He himself is donning the chef's hat." He smiled at Patty, and gallantly offered her his arm. "Tony's the owner, and a member of the club where Leslie works. I told him about this, and he volunteered to give us a custom dessert. Nobody else can order it."
Leslie's mother laughed gaily, and linked her arm with his. "You certainly know how to make a production of a special occasion, Kendall." Bob sat next to Leslie, while Kendall and Patty were paired on the other side of the table. The younger woman lit a cigarette shortly after they were seated. Kendall hoped against hope that Patty would light up too. Leslie's mother chose instead to look around the restaurant. "I think I'm going to visit the powder room," she quietly announced, obviously stunned by the luxurious surroundings.
"Mom likes you, Kendall," Leslie said when Patty had disappeared. "She's really nervous about the all the ritzy stuff. She didn't get this when she was married to dad." Bob nudged her and softly warned about playing matchmaker. "Well," the young woman indignantly sniffed, "I didn't say they were on a date, did I? But I haven't seen her fix her face twice in an evening before." Kendall laughed to cover his pleased expression. Truth to tell, Patty Weaver was interesting to him, too. He could see exactly where Leslie got her looks from, and Patty was definitely not matronly. And she smoked Mores, which placed her above the standard crowd. But, he ultimately dismissed Leslie's comments as those of a wistful daughter. The conversation had turned to small talk about summer plans before Leslie's mom returned to the table.
"This is so wonderful, Kendall," Patty bubbled, settling into her chair. "I just feel sort of bad that you're paying for this and I'm just tagging along." He assured her again that it was no problem, and that he really wanted to do this for Leslie. She smiled at him; he was cute, if a bit young for her these days, but she wasn't going to quibble over a few years. Not slender, not fat, but big... yeah, she could have seen herself dating this guy under different circumstances. But, he was her daughter's boss, and just taking them out to dinner because of her graduation tomorrow. These were not exactly circumstances for an--encounter. But he was so very--cute. Patty opened her purse and removed a pack of menthol More cigarettes. "I hope--oh never mind, I've already said that once already, haven't I?" His smile and the casual, gentlemanly way he offered her a light made her feel a little less nervous. As she took a long draw on the More, Patty felt more of her nervousness recede. She lifted her chin and silently exhaled. Kendall just let her be; that was another good thing about him--smoking didn't bother him. Michael and she had grown apart over many issues: smoking and the Mores were two of Michael's favorite nags after he had quit.
Kendall pretended to study the wine list while watching Patty smoke. While there was nothing exotic about her style, the relaxed, feminine way she handled her ciga- rette was more than he usually got to watch outside of his hypnotic students. She smoked gracefully, a natural sensuality about it. Her lips wrapped around the filter, and she drew, slowly, steadily. She would swallow the smoke, a small wisp would appear from her nose, and then pause to purse her lips (freshly re-painted a soft red, he noticed) and tilt her head slightly upwards. Patty's exhales were almost silent, sending a long, steady trail of smoke into the air above her head. And she was smoking a More, holding the long, slender, brown cigarette near the filter tip, between dainty fingers and stretched arm. He knew he couldn't resist her, he wanted her, this incredibly sexy woman, her age be damned... but he knew he couldn't have her. After all, she was Leslie's mother, and they were celebrating the young woman's pending graduation.
Dinner was wonderful, as expected, and the Italian creme rolls with handmade Italian ice had been a fitting dessert, as spectacular as advertised. The owner himself (complete with chef's hat) presented dessert with a graduation card for Leslie. Kendall enjoyed his guests' pleasure more than he had expected--he really was having a good time, even if Patty had only smoked the one cigarette before dinner . After dessert had been finished, and all at the table were well sated, the cigar box arrived. Bob immediately asked Kendall for advice, then quickly selected an Arturo Fuente Churchill. Kendall chose the Montecruz Sun-grown No. 2. The maitre'd, well aware of Kendall's usual dinner companions, paused and looked at the ladies. "What's he looking at me for?" Leslie whispered.
"He's wondering if either of you two ladies would care for an after-dinner cigar," Kendall explained.
Leslie giggled, but her boyfriend immediately said, "C'mon Les, it's your graduation. Be adventurous. In a place like this--" He broke off his statement and pointed out another woman enjoying a cigar across the room. "See? Nobody will even notice. Besides, just think of how many 'secret cigar-room deals' you could get in on when you go to work for Massey." He looked at her and shrugged.
"Oh what the hell," Leslie said and immediately followed that with, "If I die, you're gonna miss a lot." She looked in the box, and then back at Kendall. "Help. I don't even know what to look for." Kendall wisely picked one out for her, a Montecruz No. 200 with a Natural Claro wrapper, telling her he would spare her the cigar primer for now, but that she was welcome to speak with Petra any time she needed cigar advice. Everybody then turned and looked at Patty, who blushed.
"I suppose you're asking me if I want one," she said. They all nodded. Leslie urged her mother on, but Patty declined. "No, no, no. You're young enough to experiment but it was hard enough for me to accept smoking a brown cigarette in public. I got more than my fair share of grief over that, and I'm too old to change habits." She removed another cigarette, and the maitre'd lit it be- fore clipping and lighting the cigars at the table. "I'm afraid I'm just an old stick-in-the-mud, guys." She lifted her chin, and exhaled very slowly, chest rising.
"I hardly think of you as old, Patty," Kendall blurted. Both of them blushed, he for having let the thought slip out, and she for receiving it. Bob and Leslie managed to keep their mouths shut, but the look in their eyes said that they were very aware that the night had just taken on a slightly different tone. Patty took an uncharacteristic quick drag and exhaled a fine stream of smoke through her lips. Kendall noted the abrupt departure from her usual style, and realized that his compliment had definitely hit home. "Excuse me, I need to talk to Tony--to thank him for this evening," he awkwardly said, and left the table. He headed for the reception area at the restaurant, wondering if he had made a mistake; Patty's attitude towards him was definitely going to change. Would it be for the better or would she think him strange?
The conversation started as soon as he was out of ear- shot. "Mom, he likes you! Go for it!" Leslie whispered urgently.
"Leslie--" she began with false exasperation, "--I can handle my own love life just fine, thank you." There was a brief silence, and Bob strategically excused himself to go to the men's room. "But he is cute, isn't he?" Patty smiled.
"And single. He lives in a really nice house. And the Petra he mentioned--she's his butler and lives in his carriage house," her daughter supplied. "C'mon mom, what have you got to lose?" She took a puff from her cigar. "See, I'm being daring. You can, too."
Patricia Weaver sighed. It had been a long time since she'd met a man who was this interesting, who made her heart beat a little faster. Kendall was cute. And single, living alone with a female butler (yeah, right.) There was no doubt that he was attracted to her--that made sense out of a lot of things that had happened this evening--but was the ten-or-so year difference between them too much? She sighed again, and put out her cigarette, only to light another. What was the worse that could happen? Rejection, and it would be her age that was the reason. She didn't look bad for forty-three but he obviously had his pick of women. She took a long, long draw, exhaling leisurely, sending thick streams of smoke flowing from her lips. Patty was nervous, and smoking wasn't making these particular butterflies settle down.
Kendall and Bob returned at the same time, interrupting her musing. "How are the cigars, folks?" Kendall asked. "They are a custom at Fortissimo. Tony prides himself on his humidor." Leslie took a draw on the Montecruz, and slowly pushed the smoke out through her lips.
"Actually, Kendall, these really aren't bad. I could get to like them. Maybe I'll talk to Petra before I leave town. Be adventurous, right?" She smiled sweetly, but the words weren't lost on her mother.
Patty took a long, deep drag on her cigarette. She exhaled slowly, silently. Kendall was watching her, a hint of desire in his eyes. Her insides fluttered. Maybe I've got a decent chance at him after all...

As they got back into the limousine, Leslie asked, "Can you drop Bob and me off at school first, Kendall? We left the car there. Could you also take my mom back to her hotel, since it's sort of on your way home?" Leslie asked the questions with complete innocence; her motives were considerably less than so. Her mom shot her an annoyed glance, but it disappeared when Kendall quickly agreed.
Kendall and Patty found themselves alone when the limo pulled away from the theater building at the university. "I understand that you live with your butler," she said, trying to break the ice. He said yes, and asked if she would care to see his estate. "We have a graduation to attend tomorrow morning," Patty said, suppressing the rising swell of excitement.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world, either," he replied. "But I meant some other time. Your hotel is about three minutes away from where we are now." Disappointed, Patty nodded absently, swirling her ankle, and her excitement died. She reached for another cigarette, looking into her purse so Kendall wouldn't see her disappointment. She covered a small jump when a flame popped into existence next to her. He was always ready to light her cigarette. It had been a while since she had been treated like such a lady.
"Thank you," Patty quietly said. She watched the smoke swirl from her cigarette between puffs as they rode in silence. The car swung into the drive of the hotel. Her heart sped up. It was now or never.
"Well, Patty, we have arrived. I'm very happy to have met you, and I hope that we will see each other tomorrow," Kendall said. He tried to keep the excitement out of his voice, but Patty was such a sexy smoker that he couldn't completely manage.
This was it. The limo driver was opening the door. "Would you excuse us just a second, please," Patty requested, and the door closed. "Kendall, I'm not in the habit of being forthright. But if this were my house, and we didn't have to get up early tomorrow morning, I would be inclined to invite you in for a nightcap." She took another nervous drag, wondering what would happen next.
"Patty--I'm flattered," Kendall began, then took a deep breath to calm himself. "If I didn't have to get up and dress for tomorrow morning, I'd be inclined to accept." He saw her smile. "However, it is my understanding that you have no plans for lunch tomorrow. I would be pleased if you would join me after the ceremony for brunch at my club."
"Kendall, that would be marvelous." She leaned over and kissed him, a brief peck that turned into a minute of hot, wet, insistent probing. Patty had no idea how that had happened, but it was great. "Ummm... My flight doesn't leave until Sunday?"
"I'll send you home on the last flight to Chicago Sunday night," Kendall replied, and reluctantly let Patty go. He was incredibly turned on. Patty took a final, long, luxurious drag from her More, her eyes glowing almost as brightly as the burning end, and he almost lost it. He briefly thought of having Petra when he got home, but Patty's parting smile to him as she got out of the limousine erased it. He wanted to save it all for her.

"You're kidding!!!" Leslie whispered to her mother after the graduation ceremony. "He's taking you to lunch at the club today???" Her daughter smiled impishly. "Who made the first move?"
"I think I did, dear," Patty replied with a grin. "I mean, I don't think he's going to wind up as your step- father or anything, but we do--like each other."
"He's got a cute butt, too."
"Leslie!!!" Patty said in mock horror. "Well, you have fun with your dad at brunch--don't say anything about this, okay?" Her happy expression darkened as she saw her ex-husband and his twenty-four-year-old wife approaching. "I'm going to the theater building to meet Kendall," she whispered. "I love you, and I'll talk to you tomorrow." She headed off in the exact opposite direction from Leslie's father.

"Is it all right to smoke in your house?" Patty asked. He said yes, and lit her cigarette as they sat on his bed. "By the way, lunch was wonderful, Kendall. Thank you, because it kept me from getting angry over Leslie's father's behavior." He smiled at her, his face flushed and still full of excitement. It made Patty feel a little warmer in her afterglow. She took a long pull from the More, exhaling contentedly, and studying the cigarette. "I hope you don't think I'm strange because I smoke brown cigarettes. I'm really not eccentric."
"No, Patty, you're not strange," he smiled. "Actually, you could say that they're rather stylish, just because it's so unusual to see a woman smoking a brown cigarette."
She nodded. "That's probably the reason I started smoking these when I was younger. Do you know it was a--contention with Leslie's father?" Patty took another extended drag, and waited to finish exhaling before resuming. "Especially when he quit smoking. He loved to say it proved I was a castrating dyke at heart."
"Patty--after this afternoon, if you're I dyke, then I'm a lesbian!" They both laughed. Kendall had been studying Patty as she smoked. Such a feminine, sexy More smoker... He was feeling the effects of his fetish. The conversation would be interrupted soon.
She finished her girlish laugh, and apologized, "I'm sorry--I really shouldn't be talking about that. I guess I just have a bunch of middle-age hang-ups." Kendall put his arms around her and kissed her very deeply, and Patty felt her insides turn to warm goo. "I'm at least ten years younger after that," she gasped, trying to give herself a chance to recover. By the looks of things, Kendall was already recovered. Oh, those younger men... "Leslie says you're a hypnotist," she said, a little distractedly. He was definitely recovered.
Kendall laughed. "Stage only. I'm not like a hypnotherapist or anything. It's an amusement, and great at parties." He watched her, enraptured by the long, brown cigarette, and Patty's flawless, extremely feminine handling. She exhaled with ease, a stream of smoke formed by the small "O" of her lips.
Patty nodded. "Well, I've never been hypnotized. I went to a hypnotherapist once to try to stop smoking. It didn't work." Kendall suppressed a laugh. He had spent a lot of time hypnotizing women into starting... She put out her smoke and let a long, silent exhale go. Kendall wanted her again. Now. He had ever since he'd seen her with the brown 120mm cigarette between her fingers, and now he was going to have her. Again. And again. Until Sunday night.

"So will you come visit me in Chicago sometime?" Patty Weaver, flawlessly made up, stood in the doorway to Kendall's house looking him directly in the eyes. It had been a wonderful weekend, filled with more passionate sex than she would have thought possible. He had always been ready for her over the past two-and-a- half days, demonstrating a stamina that, once she had gotten used to it, she had taken full advantage of. Patty had no idea why he had been so hot for her, but the fact that he had been made her feel fifteen years younger right now. Kendall assured her that he would, and asked if she would give Leslie and Bob his regards at the airport. Both Patty and Kendall agreed that it would be a bit awkward if he were to be there as well. She gave him a soft peck on the cheek and headed for the taxi. Even if he didn't call again, she hadn't done too badly for a forty-three year old divorcée with a daughter graduated from college. She smiled, knowing that the taxi driver could only guess at the reasons behind it.
Kendall closed the door with regret and exhaustion. Patty had been a sexual dynamo. Her lust kept pace with his fetish, especially since she liked having a cigarette after sex. His weakness for attractive female More smokers had gotten him into this, but he didn't mind at all. The best thing was that he didn't have to do any training, programming or hypnotism. It was a weekend off from the training program, one that he hadn't realized how welcome it was until now. Kendall went to his study and copied Patty's Chicago phone number into his book. She excited him.
